11 A Need For Something Sweet And Strong
Since it had been obvious Duo wanted to talk, even though he had been denying this fiercely, Trowa had suggested coffee at his place instead of at the local diner.
With a smile that was supposed to —but did not quite manage to— hide his pain, despair and an ocean of un-cried tears, Duo had stated how he liked his coffee: "Sweet enough to put up with my antics and strong enough to smack me back in line when I'm being an asshole."
"Too bad I'd gotten so fucking used to being smacked across the face I failed to see the line ends somewhere," he sighed when Trowa returned from the kitchen with coffee.
Trowa sat down next to his friend and put two mugs on the table, hesitating a moment to reply; he felt he did not know Hilde well enough to pass judgement.
"Maybe… maybe what you need now isn't another slap across the face," he finally answered, gently brushing some bangs curtaining Duo's face behind his ear, "but a sweet, strong cup of comfort."
12 The Kiss
[series: Warm Fuzzies And Logic #2]
"What the… HELL… just happened," Duo panted out loud at his reflection in a shop window, three blocks from the party he had just left running.
He had promised Quatre he would try to behave for once and he had managed to amuse himself by observing the guests; seeing Trowa smile and let his guard down after a number of cocktails had been a major source of intrigue. Duo had not seen it coming, though, that his fascination would later prompt him to pin Trowa to a wall and press his lips to those of his quiet friend's, in a moment that seemed to last several minutes (though Duo was fairly sure it had been a lips-only deal and, even in just the no-tongue-kiss category, not his best work).
But still, Trowa had just stupidly stood there and let it happen!
The world, now, was spinning like one of those stomach-churning carnival rides; burying his face in his hands and feeling the heat on his cheeks, Duo feared the alcohol was only to blame in part.
13 Embodiment of Temptation
"Had that dream again last night," Duo said, leaning back on the wooden bench, adjusting his sunglasses, "you know, the one in which the wars never happened."
Trowa shifted his gaze from a patch of wildflowers to Duo and supplied, "The one in which you're a good boy," indicating he knew which of several recurring dreams Duo was talking about.
"Yeah, but in this one," Duo continued, "you were there too, as a street vendor; you sold me two apples, even though I said I don't like them."
Trowa chuckled a bit and eventually laughed out loud, making Duo raise his head and down his sunglasses to cast him a suspicious glance.
"That's awful," Trowa managed, rubbing the back of his head and then looking down, "because that would make me twice as bad as the serpent in the Garden of Eden…"
14 Camping Out
"Were you ever afraid of the dark?"
Trowa turned his attention to Duo, but could hardly make out his features in the night; they were far from civilisation, and a thick layer of clouds obscured most of the stars.
"No," Trowa replied, "you?"
"Neh," Duo said, the grin audible in his voice, "never, until that one time Heero lent me his night vision goggles and took me into a cave full of bats."
"I can promise you there are no bats here," Trowa said, "and as long as the raccoons don't mistake your toes for midnight snacks, you'll be fine."
15 Slice of Peace
The view from the roof of his apartment building was tremendous; Trowa had often wondered why he was the only one who ever went up there, but was still thankful this was the case.
Up here, it was easy to forget about the hassles of daily life; the people that were always tugging him for something they wanted him to do yesterday; being officially reprimanded for disobeying an order – and overhearing the fresh hallway gossip of how he had Une practically sopping on her chair, using his seductive prowess to make her let him get away with a mere scolding.
The insistent beeping of his cell phone pierced through the perfect static of wind rushing past his ears. The display showed Duo's name; after a moment's hesitation, Trowa told the beeping cell "I'll call you back", and switched off its power.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, granting himself just a few more heartbeats of untouchable freedom.
